Innovation can be described as the modification and conversion of consolidated systems and processes with the introduction of new aspects that make them better, more efficient, more effective. In the energy sector, innovation is a fundamental enabling factor for the evolution of the electricity grid. To handle the increasingly complex system, new technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data management and new digital tools are essential for the integration of renewable energy sources on the grid.

Innovation is not limited to technology though. The most fundamental challenge is to change people's culture and the way they work, also in order to manage the digitalisation of the system.

Creating work communities, developing synergies between resources with different and varied skills, building a continuous synergy with the territory, allows for a collective vision of the processes which is the basis for the creation of innovative projects that are strategic for the evolution of the electricity system.
