SALA DATI, a Terna podcast on electricity consumption #3

Gaudi explained and the latest updates on renewables in Italy. With Stefano de Martino and Ottavia Gioffredi from the Plant Master Data and CRM Systems team at Terna.

Gaudi explained and the latest updates on renewables in Italy. The Single Data Management System for Power Generation Plants (GAUDI) is a portal providing unique identification of electricity generation plants in Italy. This national register of generation points, both renewable and non-renewable, currently exceeds 1,200,000 units. The platform also manages the information flow, ensuring optimal cooperation between the various operators in the electricity sector (Terna, distributors, producers and the energy-services operator GSE) and providing information useful for evaluating security and resilience of the electricity system.

In the third episode of the Sala Dati ("data room") podcast, we hear from Stefano de Martino, head of Plant Master Data and CRM Systems at Terna, and Ottavia Gioffredi, his colleague.

[Stefano de Martino] «The Single Data Management System for Power Generation Plants (GAUDI) is a portal providing unique identification of electricity generation plants in Italy. This national register of generation points, both renewable and non-renewable, currently exceeds 1,200,000 units. The platform was developed and is managed by Terna in accordance with applicable regulations established by the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA)».

«My name is Stefano de Martino, head of Plant Master Data and CRM Systems at Terna».

[Ottavia Gioffredi] «My name is Ottavia Gioffredi and I work with Stefano on the GAUDI platform, today we will explain what GAUDI is and its role for the electricity system».

[Jingle with speaker] Sala Dati, the monthly podcast by Terna that explores the world of electricity consumption in Italy

[Ottavia Gioffredi] «All systems, those running at low and medium voltage and large high and very-high-voltage power stations, must be registered on the GAUDI platform and complete the electricity-market qualification process, going through a series of steps ending with commissioning».

[Stefano de Martino] «GAUDI gathers general details, technical specifications and commercial details for all generation plants. Using a special control panel, it is possible to monitor the entire lifecycle of the plant, from grid-connection request to commissioning and any subsequent modifications. In addition, it manages the information flow, ensuring optimal cooperation between the various operators in the electricity sector (Terna, distributors, producers and the energy-services operator GSE), providing information useful for evaluating security and resilience of the electricity system».

[Ottavia Gioffredi] «So, Stefano, we find very important information on GAUDI! For example the exact number of renewable plants installed in the last month in Italy...».

[Stefano de Martino] «Exactly Ottavia! Through our reporting activity, we are able to constantly monitor the situation and notify our stakeholders of statistics for plants in terms of numbers and power. As you know, we update and publish these data every month on the website Terna.it, and this represents an important indicator for the trend of renewables in Italy, particularly crucial in the context of the energy transition».

[Ottavia Gioffredi] «In fact, I was just looking at the section for renewables and saw that in 2022 more than 200,000 solar plants were activated, for an increase in power on 2021 of approximately 2.5 GW».

[Stefano de Martino] «As you are so well informed, can you also tell me which region has the greatest number and the highest total power for wind systems?».

[Ottavia Gioffredi] «I certainly can! In December 2022, Basilicata had 1,457 plants, while in Apulia the installed power figure was approximately 3 GW».

[Stefano de Martino] «OK, we’ll leave hydroelectric and bioenergy system for now... considering that everyone has access to the data!».

«We’ve been Stefano de Martino [Ottavia Gioffredi] and Ottavia Gioffredi and you’ve been listening to the third episode of Sala Dati, the podcast about electricity consumption in Italy explained by Terna professionals».
