Terna: a strategic plan that accelerates sustainable growth

Over 6 billion for the development of the national electricity grid: the highest value ever as an economic commitment for the development of the country.

A long-term time horizon is fundamental for business strategies, especially if you are responsible for an entire country’s transmission grid.

It is specifically for this reason that the 2019-2023 Strategic Plan "Grids and Values - Accelerating a Sustainable Growth", which details the investments Terna plans for the next five years, represents an important stake in the difficult path towards achieving the energy transition objectives, with a strong focus on land development, grid security and service quality.

After a year that closes with an increase in the main economic and financial indicators, the Group’s attention has shifted to the future of the grids.

A substantial financial commitment has been prepared for the five-year period: the highest ever with 6,2 billion in investments, 20% more than in the previous plan, most of which are focused on the development of the national electricity grid, with works on the rationalisation of power lines, interconnections with foreign countries and the construction of new underground or undersea cables with lower environmental impacts.

Over € 6 billion for Italy represents Terna’s highest ever financial commitment, accompanies the electricity system toward complete decarbonisation and facilitates the full integration of energy from renewable sources into the grid.

Sustainability, territory, innovation and people. Special attention to local areas, meetings with local communities, respect for the environment and the use of advanced technology are the guides that will move Terna forward over the coming years. "Invisible" works will account for over 60% of the new power lines that will come into operation over the course of the Plan, either as underground or undersea cables with lower environmental impacts.

Grid digitalisation and innovation. Among the defined investments, around € 700 million will be dedicated to developing solutions and projects with high technological performance to cope with the growing complexity of the system. The search for innovative solutions and technologies for the development and modernisation of the grid will be shared with all the main stakeholders in the territory and the local communities.

A proactive approach based on listening and dialogue which involves the local people in each implementation phase of the projects.
