Brazil: a second great result

The works of the "Jauru-Cuiabá 2", Terna's second power line in Brazil, have been completed.

Following construction of the strategic Santa Maria 3 – Santo Angelo 2 line in the Rio Grande do Sul state, Terna chalks up another success in Brazil. Works have in fact been completed on the Jauru-Cuiabá 2 project, with commissioning of the new 500 kV line - running 355 km in the Mato Grosso state, in central Brazil.

This is an important project, not only for development of the region, but also in terms of sustainability. The new line will allow integration into the national transmission grid of energy produced from renewable plants present in the centre of the Country. Like the line in the Rio Grande do Sul state, 75% of the route for the new infrastructure (537 pylons of 718 total) has been created using “single-stem” pylons with a smaller footprint and far lower environmental impacts compared to traditional solutions.

Works have been completed four months ahead of the schedule agreed with Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (Aneel) that launched an international tender in June 2017 for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of two infrastructures in Brazil (for a total investment value of around € 160 million). Over 19 months, worksites saw 33 companies and over 1300 technical operators involved, with important knock-on effects for the region.

Terna has helped to promote a special social inclusion and responsibility programme, with a particular focus on health, involving the residents of the areas crossed by the power line. In the Mato Grosso state, citizens were donated medical equipment and a health education and training programme on malaria, an endemic illness in the region.
