From Lombardy to Sicily: investments for a more secure grid

Terna’s 2019-2023 Strategic Plan focusses on the needs of the territory, with targeted investments by region

Together, the people and the territories are the fundamental element for achieving the investments set out in the Terna 2019-2023 Strategic Plan. Terna communicates and shares projects with each local community, defining the investments for the various regions based on the specific needs of the electricity grid and in respect of the environment and social aspects of each area.

The regions of Veneto and Sicily are a priority for Terna’s development strategy. Specifically, Sicily will see investments of € 614 million for an even more secure, resilient and sustainable electricity grid capable of responding to the changes that energy transition will require. Similarly, in Veneto, investments of € 355 million will be allocated to the development, maintenance and renovation of regional electricity infrastructures. In terms of these infrastructures, the construction of approximately 100 km of underground cable lines is planned. Among the planned works, the main project is the new “invisible” Dolo-Camin power line, which is necessary to improve the security of the regional electricity grid and is the result of an intense and constructive process of dialogue with the local communities.

Tuscany and Lombardy: strategic regions for the development and modernisation of the national electricity grid. In Tuscany, € 510 million will be invested in the renovation, maintenance and development of the grid. It is from this central Italian region that the SA.CO.I 3 line will start its journey, an important interconnection which will travel through Corsica to arrive in Sardinia and, with the use of modern technologies, will renovate the current undersea cable in service since 1966. In terms of the investments in northern Italy, Lombardy is playing a leading role for Terna, with investments of € 516 million over the next five years. The main planned works provide for the rationalisation of the Milan and Lodi electricity grid, the restructuring project for the Valle Sabbia electricity grid and the efficiency improvements for the existing electricity substation in Magenta.

Apulia, Sardinia and Abruzzo: over € 1 billion of investments in three strategic regions for the development of the electricity grid connections in the south of Italy; from the new Bisaccia-Deliceto and Foggia-Villanova power lines, which will improve the level of meshing on the grid between Campania, Apulia and Abruzzo, to the SA.CO.I 3 connection involving the Sardinian community of Santa Teresa di Gallura and the innovative substation in Codrongianos.
